multi-sensory syllables workshop

Thanks to everyone who attended my workshop at the Children’s Dyslexia Center in Belleville, IL on incorporating multi-sensory components into working with syllables and syllable types!

Participants spent the afternoon learning all about Silly Bulls and Syllable Soup!

One of the cornerstones of the Orton-Gillingham methodology is to incorporate multi-sensory activities into the lesson. This is especially important when working with abstract terms like “syllable” and “syllable types”. A solid, working understanding of these concepts is at the heart of helping our students become better readers and spellers. This 2-hour workshop gave participants hands-on instruction and practical strategies for bringing a structured visual and tactile approach to working with both syllables and syllable types throughout the entire O-G lesson plan.

We spent the afternoon learning how to use two simple yet powerful tools: Silly Bulls and Syllable Soup Recipes.

Silly Bulls

Silly Bulls are a fun, graphic representation of syllables and syllable structure which provide a framework for students to translate what they are hearing, reading and spelling into a hands-on manipulative that can be incorporated throughout all sections of the lesson plan.

Syllable Soup

Syllable Soup Recipes are a graphic representation of syllable types which provide an accessible framework for students to translate the “ingredients” of a syllable into its syllable type and corresponding vowel sound.

I hope everyone left excited to try using what they learned!
